Together towards a Sustainable Future
At Libeert, we believe that real change starts at the source: the cocoa farmers. They are the foundation of our chocolate supply chain, and without them, every chocolate figure that brings a smile to your face wouldn’t be possible. Unfortunately, many of these farmers and their families face significant challenges, such as poverty and limited access to education. That’s why we’ve joined forces with the Belgian NGO Cunina to make a difference where it’s needed most.
In the Peruvian district of Chungui, we’ve launched a pilot project with Cunina that provides 50 children of cocoa farmers with access to quality preschool, primary, and secondary education. This isn’t just an investment in schooling—it’s an investment in the future of entire communities. Because knowledge is the beginning of change!
Every child matters, and so do we all
At Libeert, involvement isn’t just a buzzword. Each of our employees is personally a sponsor of a child in the project, allowing us to exchange letters regularly and build a meaningful connection with the children and their families. This personal touch fosters deeper engagement, and three of our colleagues—Ine, Laurence, and Rudy—even traveled to Peru to meet their sponsored children and the local community.
They returned with stories that moved us all. As Laurence puts it:
“The children seize every opportunity they’re given with both hands. It’s inspiring to see them truly blossom in school and how this, in turn, motivates their parents and the community.”
Education: The key to a better future
A lack of access to education keeps many cocoa farmers trapped in a cycle of poverty. By partnering with Cunina, we focus on the next generation, ensuring these children gain the knowledge and opportunities their parents never had.
This project goes beyond financial support. Through sponsorships, the children receive not only school supplies but also emotional encouragement, which is equally important. Parents who never learned to read or write themselves are empowered, gaining confidence in their abilities and their future prospects.
Continuing to build change
At Libeert, we remain closely involved in this project to evaluate where and how we can truly make a difference. As Lily Libeert says:
“We want to stay close, so we can see what can be improved and how we can expand this approach.”
Together with Cunina, we’re taking the first step toward a world where every chocolate bar and figure isn’t just sweet but also makes a positive impact.
